Why Does Aikido Train in Predetermined Forms? | The Meaning of Kata #아이키도 #인천 #Aikido #Incheon #Korea

Whenever I publish videos about Aikido, several questions come up repeatedly.

Why are the attack and response decided in advance? Why does uke repeat the same attack and ukemi? And is uke simply cooperating to make the technique work? These are natural questions for anyone seeing Aikido training for the first time.

This video addresses those questions by examining the learning structure of kata and the role of uke.

In Aikido training, the attack and response are predetermined, and the same process is repeated.

At first glance, this may look as though both partners are simply cooperating to ensure that the technique succeeds. Kata, however, is not intended to recreate a real fight or act out a predetermined result.

Kata is a learning framework in which variables are deliberately limited. By keeping the distance and speed of the attack, posture, and timing relatively consistent, practitioners can compare the causes of success and failure. The purpose of repetition is to correct movement and turn accidental success into reproducible skill.

This video discusses:

  • Why uke repeats the same attack

  • The difference between constructive resistance and resistance that obstructs training

  • Why taking ukemi before balance is broken is problematic

  • What it means to receive a technique well

  • What tori and uke each learn through kata

  • The benefits and limitations of kata training

A good uke does not create the result of the technique on tori’s behalf, but neither does uke obstruct its effect. Uke maintains posture and balance, accurately senses how the technique is working, and responds accordingly.

Kata is not the final destination. It is a starting point. Its purpose is to develop principles under limited conditions and gradually turn them into skills that can function in freer and less predictable situations.

I hope this video will be useful not only to Aikido practitioners, but also to anyone interested in the structure and purpose of repetitive kata-based training.
