Kata, Technique, Skill, and Waza: What’s the Difference?

Does the word “technique” in Aikido really refer to only one thing?

After the previous Q&A video, I received several questions in the comments about Aikido techniques and the way we train.

This video is one answer to those questions.

It explains what people often group together under the word “technique” by separating it into four perspectives:

kata,

technique,

skill,

and waza.

Kata is the framework of practice.

Technique is the concrete method used within that framework.

Skill is the ability that makes the technique actually work.

Waza is the result that appears when all of these are integrated through the practitioner’s body.

Using shomenuchi iriminage as an example,

this video looks at what can differ even when the movement appears to be the same,

and what determines the level of completion of waza.

Within the framework of kata,

on top of the underdrawing of technique,

skill adds color.

Only then does waza become complete.

I hope this video will be a useful reference for Aikido practitioners,

and for anyone interested in how kata leads to waza.
