Aikido as It Is: Quick Answers to Pointless Questions

In this video, I answer some of the questions people often ask about Aikido, including questions that can sometimes feel rather off the mark from the perspective of an actual practitioner.
This video was planned and produced by Ansan Dojo. I was not told the questions in advance. During the shoot, I was asked to answer every question on the spot, quickly and briefly, in a single sentence. For that reason, the format is closer to a speed quiz than a conventional interview.
The questions include whether people fly away just by being touched, whether Aikido teaches ki or supernatural abilities, whether cooperative kata practice has any real meaning, why Aikido does not have sparring or competition, and whether practicing Aikido would allow someone to beat a UFC fighter.
Because the questions came one after another in a very raw and direct form, and because I had to answer immediately in a single sentence, there are moments where my reactions as an actual practitioner probably show on my face.
These questions show how easily Aikido can be misunderstood or distorted. At the same time, those misunderstandings did not come only from outside perspectives. Some instructors and practitioners have also contributed to this problem by presenting Aikido in an overly mystical way, or by failing to explain the actual context of training clearly enough.
From the perspective of someone who actually trains, some of these questions may feel rather absurd. Still, that is exactly why I believe Aikido needs to be explained as it is.

合気道についてよく聞かれる質問、そして時には少し的外れに感じられる質問に、その場で答えてみました。
この動画は、安山道場の企画により制作されました。私は事前に質問内容を知らされておらず、現場で出されるすべての質問に、できるだけ短く、一言で答えるという形で撮影しました。そのため、通常のインタビューというよりは、スピードクイズに近い形式になっています。
手を触れただけで人が飛ぶのか、気や超能力を学ぶのか、相手と合わせて行う稽古に意味があるのか、なぜスパーリングや試合を行わないのか、合気道をすればUFCファイターにも勝てるのかなど、合気道についてよく出てくる質問を、短いやり取りで構成しています。
質問がかなり率直な形で次々と出され、答えもその場で短く返さなければならなかったため、実際に稽古している立場からの戸惑いや反応が、表情に出ている部分もあるかと思います。
これらの質問は、合気道がどれほど誤解されやすく、また歪めて受け取られやすいかを示しているとも言えます。同時に、そうした誤解は外部からの見方だけで生まれたものではなく、一部の指導者や稽古者が合気道を必要以上に神秘化したり、実際の稽古の文脈を十分に説明してこなかったことにも、その一因があるのではないかと考えています。
実際に稽古している立場からすると、やや困惑するような質問もあります。しかし、だからこそ合気道をあるがままに伝える必要があると考えました。
