A Member Was at the Scene of the Incheon Knife Attack | Aikido Samsungdang

During a knife attack at a large shopping complex in Incheon, South Korea, one of our Aikido Samsungdang members was on the first floor of the building where the incident occurred.

People nearby were shouting for others to run, but the member could not understand what was happening and remained frozen in place.

This experience led me to speak with our members before training about what really matters when facing danger.

Learning Aikido does not mean we must confront every threat. Nor does it mean that running away is always the only correct answer.

**What matters is making the most reasonable decision for the situation we face.**

In my view, a dojo is not a place that trains action heroes.

A dojo provides an environment of **controlled risk**. Within a carefully managed training environment, we practice not only posture, distance, and timing, but also learn to recognize our own reactions and limitations, and to develop better judgment and appropriate responses.

This video includes our discussion before class and explanations during Tanto-dori Gokyo (knife-taking, fifth control) practice.

It does not present a particular knife-defense technique as the correct response to a real attack. Rather, it reflects my personal perspective as an Aikido instructor on how martial arts training can help us approach danger with better judgment.

【A Member's Reflection】

After training, the member wrote about the incident and what they had learned.

Three lessons stood out:

1. It's okay to run away.

2. Don't focus only on the knife or the hand holding it. See the whole situation.

3. Maintain your spirit, even when you are afraid.

The member described the class as an opportunity to reflect on how to protect themselves in a dangerous situation.

The full anonymous reflection is included in our related posts on the Samsungdang Naver Blog.

For reference, I'd also like to share a firsthand account from an Aikido Samsungdang member who serves as a police officer.
